Melee? Caster? Healer?

In any game, be it an MMO (WoW, FFXI etc) or a console game, how do you prefer to play? Does our own every day persona affect what role we like to play as well?

In a console RPG i tend to prefer the characters who are not as loud or out spoken/flashy, they also tend to be the caster or the healers in a lot of games. (go figure).

In RTS I do tend to take the defensive path and unit conservation.

In MMO’s i will tend to pick caster/support type classes before venturing out into a melee or tank role.

IRL I admit i do tend to blend into the background doing my own thing, not really being outgoing till i get to know a group of individuals. Also helping out people IRL is important to me, so a backline job in games is something that comes natural to me.

My younger brother on the otherhand, like to be on the front lines, bashing heads, tanking mobs. When he did play an MMO he was a Paladin in FFXI. When he wanted to kill things – he played warrior and bashed things with a great axe. IRL he is the outgoing one.

Looking at my own guild Shadow Rising, seeing people in their class choices and then hearing them on vent, I can see for the most part why they are the class they are. Although there are a few exceptions.

In games does your class match your personality? Or does your backstory behind the character more your personality? Or are you a complete opposite of your character?

raid update – VDW down 2nd time! Our Shamans are pro. *nods* Rotface down with a paladin who has never kited the slimes before. Pro kiting Arv 😛

    Hmmmmnnnn… Well let’s see:

NWN: (Shut up, it counts.) Warrior and Cleric (Nerf Clerics)
FFXI: (PLD, WAR, THF were my 3 highest jobs. Started as THF (stupidly) Liked WAR the most.
CoH: Played as Ranged DPS, didn’t stick with it long.
WoW: Damn near everything, Started as a hunter tho.
Aion: Started as a tank, but that was a conscious decision. I wanted to see as much of the game as I could.

Soooo.. It seems like for me it works a bit like this: Usually I’ll roll a noncritical class till I get a feel for the game, then try my hand at tanking or healing.

      NWN ahhh good game.

I think alot of people started as thf…Th1 is your friend.

      CoH…couldnt get into that one

WoW been a blast so far.

      Aion…just eye candy imo.

Aion wasn’t bad. I never got even to the midlevels, but the early stuff was solid at least.. Quests were a bit bland and it lacked the lore-ness and presence of WoW (understandable since Azeroth has 10 years worth of established history to work with) but the crafting seemed cool and the combat was interesting. Flying was mostly a gimmick tho, which made me sad. Woulda stuck with it probably except.. Meh. Already had WoW, so..

NWN was rad … Sad that NWN2 didn’t really live up to it’s legacy. *pause to shed a single, silent tear* But yeah Clerics were just ridiculous if you were willing to play a bit fast and loose with how the class was supposed to work. Just get some horrible evil diety as a patron, (no alignment restriction, har.) Ditch all your healing spells (you can heal with 1st aid skill just as easily) and pick up double-fistfulls of Sizzly death magic and world-ending AOE.

You get to wear plate. Combine that with some protection spells and you’re rolling around with AC26+, (plus the possibility of antimagic defense if you need that) Shore up your shitty melee ability with some on-hit weapon effect spell (I forget the name but it adds straight +damage based on caster level). And there you go.

“BEHOLD. I have come from afar to break all your stuff and kill all your dudes and generally fuck up your whole day and/or face.”

*Casts wall of swords and lights everything the fuck on fire*

        …Hmn.

…Yeah I might have to go dig out those game discs tonight. >.>

    I am evil – I play a warlock

I do pretty much anything for those I care about – I play a resto druid

    Yeah I think I fit

Koala’s cannot be evil – does not compute. logic error!

      • March 26, 2010 at 6:57 pm

        dropbears!

        • March 26, 2010 at 7:00 pm

ok this maybe dumb on my part….but what is a drop bear?

          • March 26, 2010 at 7:02 pm

Drop Bears resemble Koalas, with several noticeable differences:

1.Koalas do not grow up to 2m in height.
2.Koalas do not have sharp canine teeth (Used for bark or meat).
3.It is unlikely for a Koala to have a tail.
4.Koalas do not eat their young.
5.Drop Bears do not have pouches.
6.Drop Bears do not photograph well.
7.Koalas will not give birth to a Howard love child.
8.Koalas are cute according to tourists, tourists don’t survive saying that a drop bear is cute.

Compared with Koalas, which some authorities insist are close relatives of these creatures, Drop Bears are usually browner in colour, ranging from dark brown to darker brown. They have short, thick, curls of fur, and a single digit on each paw. The digit terminates in a long claw-like retractable nail. This makes them especially good at eye-gouging and slicing open the skin of their prey (a practice which can facilitate growth of particularly virulent strains of swamp-borne infection).

There have been rare sightings of Drop Bears on terra firma (ie, not in trees) although there are some rare species which have not taken to the trees, and are the most dangerous. The only individuals to describe these have been American tourists, who wisely listened to their tour guide and placed vegemite, behind their ear and/or on their nose (this being the only known protection against this species). Unfortunately these descriptions have been seized by the A.D.O.R.S.P.A (Australian Department Of Rare Species Protection Agency)in order to keep tourists travailing to Australia. This speciees can be found in all states of Australia and comes out mainly at day time.

ROFL. Nice. Yup that is you. Cute on the outside, with a nasty surprise as well. XD

Pure kitteh here. I will probably never play tank because I don’t really have the desire or personality to be a leader. And any pug I was in with someone telling me gogogo would drive me batshit crazy.

Prefer caster/ranged types. I didn’t even realize how miserable melee fighting was for me until I switched from enhance to ele. I feel like I get a “whole picture” type of viewpoint and not just the narrow focus I tended to have with melee.

    • March 26, 2010 at 6:57 pm

Agreed Zar…i having the big picture feel is good. looking at a mobs back not so much fun!

      • March 26, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Ranged is arrite but TBH I think I prefer melee. (except for when I’m getting killed by things I can’t see because I’m in the center of a massive clusterfuck of mobs and spell effects. But that’s just at the moment, these things are never set in stone for me anyway.

I like tanking because I have a perverse desire to be helpful, and because it’s a bit more challenging than DPS. I don’t necessarily want to be a leader ( Most good parties run themselves anyway) But when everything goes correctly (Good DPS + competent heals) there’s a nice zen feeling to it.

        Of course if there’s 1 or 2 members who are terrible or impatient or simply don’t know WTF, it can make a tank’s life M I S E R A B LE.

Ok, so I play a tank/dps (warrior). I also play a dps/tank (Dk). I also play a disc/shadow priest. What does that say about me?

    • March 26, 2010 at 7:26 pm

The fact that you have a utility ability on every toon means that you are always wanting to help.

Since you can fulfill every role you are flexible

      • March 26, 2010 at 9:11 pm

I would say you like to protect people imo.

Prot spec war. tank spec DK, and disc priest.

The DPS side just indicates you may or not have a fiery side. But as we have seen you do.
